Ocean Hill/Brownsville, 2003

Shelly was one of my first mentors in New York City. She taught me about the 1968 teacher’s strike in New York City, when she crossed the picket line. During that strike, crossing the line meant you were showing solidarity with community control efforts by Black and Latino parents.  In 2003, I created a series of mixed media artworks based on the strike, using researched images, cut paper, and paint.
