About

Leigh Klonsky is an artist and an art teacher living in New York City.

My practice is grounded in collage & textiles, combining found plastic, natural materials, and photographs to reveal the tension and joy of living life in relation to nature.  As someone who grew up in a big city with very little connection to nature, I am interested in the relationship people have to the nature they live with every day. I am interested in how that relationship can be a site of conflict, of promise and a representation of the many other systems we live within. My artwork is expressed through the structures of collage, basketry, weaving, drawings and installation.

I am inspired by artists who use textile  in non-utilitarian ways, such as Josh Blackwell, Terri Friedman and Judith Scott. My work is informed by political artists Martha Rosler, Barbara Kruger and Nancy Spero, and the long tradition of revolutionary political posters, using bold color and image in juxtaposition. I also look to artists like Nari Ward and El Anatsui who use found objects to reveal stories.
